7 Top Tanning Tips and Tricks
We love fake-tan, but not 100% confident in how to best apply it. The only thing guiding us is the instructions on the back of the bottle and a bathroom mirror. To save you the trouble, we have put together a quick list of the best tips and tricks to ensure your tan is #flawless.
Here you go -
- Practice makes perfect
If you are new to the tanning game, we suggest a trial run. Pick out a gradual or a wash-off tan. This way you can practice applying without the fear of missing spots, this will give you a good indication of the colour you like, how it feels/smells on the skin but also how to apply on those trickier areas.
- Buy the right products and tools
For an even, streak-free tan, you will need to purchase a few things before you get started - Tan (duh), exfoliator, oil free moisturiser and wet wipes to correct any mistakes you make along the way.
- Exfoliate and shave 24-hours before tanning
Now you have the right products, it’s time to exfoliate your bod. Exfoliating the skin helps to remove any dead/dry skin, making the perfect face for your tan. It also helps to rub off any residual tan which will assist the tan to last longer. It is also important that you either shave or wax those hairs off. Nothing beats a clean, smooth canvas. Tanning is like art…isn’t it?
- Don’t go too light with the tan
Tan users often assume less is more, but in this case, more is good. Use enough so that the product goes on effortlessly and smooths over any white spots. You can never use too much self-tan, as the skin can only absorb a certain amount of the tanning agent. Whatever isn’t absorbed will wash off in the shower 8+ hours later.
- Prep the hands, feet and face?
Your hands, tootsies and face are a difficult part of the body to tan. We recommend an oil-free moisturiser on the above parts, the day before tanning and another light layer 30 minutes before applying the tan. Moisturiser will actually block the product from darkening these areas. When applying the tan, just remember to go a little lighter. Better yet, try out our new TAN MATE product.
- Don’t freak out if you mess up
You finally finished your tan, but notice a few dark spots where you may not have rubbed the tan in well enough. What to-do? It’s simple. Either use a baby wipe to take away some of the colour or start fresh thanks to our Vanish Envy 3-in1 soap/scrub. This loofah removes the tan with ease, all while hydrating your skin.
- After care
Your tanned, you look beautiful but the work isn’t done yet. A tan is only as good as you make it, and this includes after care. For the next few days you will need to stay on top of your moisturising, to ensure the skin remains well hydrated. Lotion will also ensure your tan maintains an even appearance. Unfortunately, due to clothing, sweat, shower and daily happenings the colour of the tan may begin to rub off in patches and fade. To keep an even tone, apply a light exfoliator onto the skin to remove traces of old tan.
